Alternative Therapies for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Some people turn to alternative therapies for chronic fatigue syndrome to ease stress or to reduce side effects and symptoms. While many people claim that such alternatives make them feel better, the effectiveness of many of these treatments has yet to be proven. Types of alternative remedies for chronic fatigue syndrome include acupuncture, massage therapy, herbal products, and meditation, among other things.

Alternative Therapies for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: An Introduction

Some people use alternative therapies for chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) to ease stress or to reduce side effects and symptoms. Most people with CFS combine alternative treatment options with the standard therapies used to treat this condition.

Types of Alternate Treatments

Alternative therapies for chronic fatigue syndrome can include:

  • Acupuncture
  • Massage therapy
  • Herbal products
  • Vitamins or special diets
  • Visualization
  • Meditation
  • Spiritual healing.

Many people with CFS claim that these alternative treatments help them feel better.

Supplements and Herbs

A variety of dietary supplements and herbal products may have benefits for people with CFS. However, the effectiveness of these remedies has not been evaluated in controlled trials.

Contrary to common belief, the "natural" origin of a product does not ensure safety. Dietary supplements and herbal products can have potentially serious side effects and can interfere or interact with prescription medications. People with CFS should speak to their healthcare provider before using any alternative therapies.
