Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Research (Cont.)

High Colonic Enema
High colonic enemas have no demonstrated value in chronic fatigue syndrome treatment. In fact, this procedure can promote intestinal disease.

Kutapressin
Kutapressin is a crude extract from pig's liver that is not readily available and has no scientific value in the treatment of CFS. Kutapressin can also elicit allergic reactions.

Neurosurgery
Surgical intervention has been suggested for patients who have malformations at the base of their skull (Chiari malformations). However, surgical intervention is not recommended at this time.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Research: Potential Benefits of Participation

In order for chronic fatigue syndrome research to be conducted, volunteers with CFS are needed. Patients with CFS who volunteer will be given the opportunity to benefit from treatments that have shown promise in earlier research. They also will make an important contribution to medical science by helping doctors learn more about chronic fatigue syndrome. Although chronic fatigue syndrome research trials may pose some risks, researchers take careful steps to protect their patients.
