Does MSM Work?

Effectiveness of MSM: What Does the Research Say?

Sometimes it is claimed that MSM works because it provides the body with sulfur, which is necessary for making certain amino acids. However, most people get more than enough sulfur from eating protein (such as meat and eggs), and sulfur deficiencies are highly unlikely.

Very preliminary evidence suggests that MSM may work for treating osteoarthritis. Some small studies show that MSM (when taken alone or with glucosamine) might reduce pain and swelling and may improve joint function. Studies have not suggested that MSM helps with stiffness, though.

One study indicated that MSM may work for seasonal allergies. However, the study was small and not designed to really show if the supplement was effective. Much more research is needed before it can be suggested that MSM really works for allergies.

There is very little scientific evidence to suggest that MSM works for any of the other claimed benefits.

Final Thoughts on MSM Effectiveness

There is very little evidence to suggest that MSM really works for most uses. It is important to understand that anecdotal evidence (testimonies from individuals) is of little value when evaluating the effectiveness of any drug or supplement. It is a good idea to check with your healthcare provider before taking MSM.
