An Introduction to MSM Dosage
The best dose for
MSM (
methylsulfonylmethane) for any use has not yet been determined. Because MSM is a
dietary supplement (not a drug), there is little information available to provide guidance about safe and effective MSM dosages.
Most studies of using MSM for
arthritis have used doses ranging from 500 mg three times a day up to 2000 mg twice daily, taken by mouth. For allergic rhinitis (a runny or stuffy nose due to
allergies), one study used an MSM dosage of 2600 mg per day.
The best MSM dosage has not been clearly established for any use. It is reasonable to follow the directions on the label of your particular MSM product. Do not exceed these recommendations unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.
General Information on Dosing With MSM
Some considerations for people taking MSM include:
- Since the manufacturing of dietary supplements (such as MSM) is not closely regulated, it is important to choose a trustworthy manufacturer for MSM supplements. It is a good idea to look for the "USP" symbol, since this means that the supplement has been tested and contains the right ingredients in the right amounts.
- If you have any chronic health problems or take any prescription medications, it is probably a good idea to check with your healthcare provider before taking MSM.
- If you are unsure about anything related to your dosage or MSM dosing in general, please talk with your healthcare provider.
